Beeb buys high tech film vault

Massive storage meets superfast pipes

Massive storage meets superfast pipes

The BBC World Service has invested in a high-tech film vault to store more than 6,000 hours of video.

The high and low resolution video stored can be accessed by 125 people at once over the ExaStore 2008 clustered network attached storage (NAS) network with more than 600MBps bandwidth.

The large capacity of the NAS and high bandwidth of the network supports news production and archiving and will allow rendering and media conversions to be carried out at the same time as video is being accessed.

The online archiving eliminates the need for tape, reducing time and costs and giving BBC staff instant access to the video.

The BBC, one of the largest broadcasting corporations in the world in terms of audience numbers, employs 26,000 staff in the UK.
