Best Buy is an On-Demand Buy
Web Services Journal reports thatAkamai Technologies now shares its J2EE-based architecture with customers on a pay-as-you-go basis. The vendor says it has already signed on big retailer Best Buy.
Web Services Journal reports thatAkamai Technologies now shares its J2EE-based architecture with customers on a pay-as-you-go basis. The vendor says it has already signed on big retailer Best Buy. According to Akamai, Best Buy taps into Akamai's WebSphere-based infrastructure for services at the retailer's e-commerce site, including on-demand components for product search, a store locator, and transaction processing.
Of course, Akamai refers to this as "SOA" on demand, whereas a couple of years ago, we would have called this kind of arrangement an ASP or Web-hosting service. (The Akamai spokesperson does qualify it as a "sort of" service oriented architecture.) But Web services is adding a new twist: componentized, granular functions that can be delivered via third parties, as well as internally.
