Boxee Box now up for pre-order with Intel Atom CE4100 processor

It seems like we've been waiting forever for D-Link's Boxee Box to launch, but there's finally an end in sight now with a new internal twist.

It seems like we've been waiting forever for D-Link's Boxee Box to launch, but there's finally an end in sight now with a new internal twist.

First announced last December, consumers can pre-order the set-top box starting today. The Boxee Box will ship starting on a still-unknown date in November to the United States, Canada, the E.U. and Australia. North American pricing is set at $199, but check your local listings in other regions.

But the bigger news today is the processor switch. Originally, the Boxee Box ran on Nvidia's Tegra 2 chip. Well, apparently it couldn't stand up to D-Link's tests or fully support 1080p HD video playback (which will be necessary for Boxee's upcoming movie library).

Enter the Intel Atom CE4100 processor, the "system-on-a-chip designed for TV and Internet integration." Considering the focus on HD playback and support for a suite of applications, that appears to have been a sound move for Boxee, but we won't really know until this home theater set-up finally hits shelves in two months.
