Budget high-speed/slow-motion capture

I'm turning to the collective intelligence of the ZDNet community for a little help with camcorders.

I'm in the market for a new camcorder and over the past few weeks I've been researching some of my needs.  One feature that I'd like to have is the ability to capture high-speed/slow-motion footage.  There are a few products out there that can handle this task but I'm reading a lot of conflicting reviews as to how good these features actually are - some are over the moon with the results, others say the feature sucks whole lemons.  I could buy a few and try them out (or probably request a few for review) but that's a time-consuming process that I don't have the time for right now.

Anyone here have any experience with high-speed/slow-motion capture using a consumer/prosumer camcorder (or any kind of setup to be honest)?  Are the results any good?  If I want high-speed/slow-motion capture will I just have to buy a proper high-speed setup?  Any and all feedback will be gladly received!
