Computer Associates International Inc. today made good on its promise to deliver in the second quarter a version of its Unicenter TNG enterprise management system designed to manage SAP AG's client-server application R/3.

Although the Unicenter TNG for SAP is integrated with SAP's own Computing Center Management System, it goes beyond CCMS to manage multiple instances of R/3 implemented on different platforms across an enterprise, according to Computer Associates' Mark Sokol, senior vice president of advanced services at the company's headquarters in Islandia, N.Y.

"The goal is to increase end-to-end availability of R/3 processes, reduce the cost to administer and troubleshoot SAP [installations] and expand and modify R/3 systems easily," said Sokol.

Unicenter TNG for SAP provides job scheduling, event and performance management, backup and recovery as well as auto discover capabilities for SAP R/3.

Computer Associates and its resellers will market the Unicenter SAP option, which is comprised of a management console and agents. It runs on Windows NT for Digital Alpha and Intel Corp. PCs, as well as Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Solaris, HP-UX Digital Unix and IBM's AIX. Pricing varies according to the size of the processor in the system each component runs on.

The SAP option is a part of Computer Associates' Open Application Management Initiative. In the next several months, the company will introduce other application-specific Unicenter options as a part of its open application management initiative.
