Cisco ONE targets biggest IT trends on single platform

Hoping to please all enterprise customers at once, Cisco's Open Network Environment is trying to cover all of the major IT current trends in one place. Is it too much?

Cisco is trying to tackle every major IT trend there is right now with the introduction of a single platform designed to unify them all.

The Cisco Open Network Environment (a.k.a. Cisco ONE) is being touted to help enterprise customers navigate through "the next wave of business innovation," which consists of the cloud, mobility, social networking and video.

Described as a "broad approach to network programmability," Cisco ONE is meant to compliment existing approaches to software-defined networking, while encompassing the entire solution stack from transport to management and orchestration.

Overall, the goals are to enable more flexible, application-driven customization of network infrastructures to help businesses realize their objectives, including serving their own customers more rapidly as well as faster monetization of new services.

Announced at Cisco Live 2012 in San Diego this week, more nitty-gritty details about the infrastructure behind Cisco ONE can be found online now.

Cisco ONE is delivered through a set of platform APIs, agents and controllers, and overlay network technologies. Beta trials and general availability are scheduled to roll out in phases starting during the fourth quarter of 2012.

At first glance, it looks like Cisco might be trying to tackle too much on one platform. But this is just the nascent stages of the system, and developers are already being given tools to help them wrap their heads around this.

For starters, Cisco introduced the One Platform Kit, which provides APIs for developers across Cisco operating systems: Cisco IOS, IOS-XR, and NX-OS.

Furthermore, Cisco is also enabling scalable virtual overlay networks for multi-tenant cloud deployments with the Cisco Nexus 1000V virtual switch. New innovations on this front include OpenStack support, programmability, multi-hypervisor capability, and VXLAN gateway functionality.
