The iPad is perfect for Web browsing, email checking, and reading while you're in bed, but give me the chance to make it my TV remote, and I may never want to get out from under the covers. And it looks like I may get my wish, as Comcast is preparing an iPad app that turns the tablet into a giant cable remote.
Dubbed Xfinity Remote, the app lets you peruse the programming guide, operate your cable box, schedule DVR recordings, and even invite friends running to app to watch live shows with you (virtually, of course). Better still, you can actually search On Demand options using the onscreen keyboard, a feature that isn't available to us subscribers using our traditional remotes.
Do I even want anything more? Maybe not if Comcast makes Xfinity Remote a free app like the iPhone the company offers. Still it's unclear if you can pair the iPad with multiple boxes in your house and if you can record two different shows on two different boxes using the same app. You can see a preview of the Xfinity Remote from Comcast CEO Brian Roberts here, but don't expect answers to whether this will cost anything or when it will become available.
