Compaq leading PC vendor in Malaysia

Compaq Computer Malaysia surpassed Acer Malaysia last year to become the top PC vendor in Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR--Acer held the crown position for the eight years from 1992 to 1999, a company spokesperson said.

Compaq Computer achieved 10.2 percent market share in Malaysia at the end of year 2000 while Acer came in a close second with 8.2 percent market share, according to figures released by International Data Corporation (IDC) Malaysia on Tuesday.

The others on the podium are Dell with 7.6 percent market share, HP at 5.4 percent and IBM at fifth placing with 4.5 percent market share.

PC shipment in year 2000 hit 673,247 units with a total value of US$857.3 million (RM3.3 billion). Of this figure, 86 percent (578,992 units) came from desktop sales, 12.2 percent (82,136 units) from portable sales and 1.8 percent were sales from Standard Intel Architecture Servers (SIAS).

Compaq also took the crown in the desktop category with nine percent market share. Both Dell and Acer were neck-to-neck in this category with 7.3 percent and 7.2 percent market share respectively. HP (5.6 percent) and IBM (3.8 percent) again took fourth and fifth placing respectively.

In the portable arena, Toshiba led with 23.1 percent market share, followed by Compaq with 17.0 percent, Acer with 15.5 percent, Twinhead at 12.2 percent and Dell at 8.4 percent.
