The deal covers only the firm's new Presario 2212 (£899 + VAT), a 180MHz Pentium-based system with 16Mb RAM, 1.6Gb hard disk, 33.6kbps modem, CD-ROM drive, sound, 14-inch monitor and Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition plus various edu-tainment and games titles. Buyers get free application support for a year as well as the more orthodox one year of free telephone support and one year on-site warranty.

"Our research shows that customers in the SOHO market, which require standalone PCs, view a brand name and service as the most important purchasing criteria along with price," said Adam Denton, Compaq UK marketing manager in a prepared statement. "In addition to the pre-sales advice and post-sales support provided by Compaq, a high proportion of these customers also want a personalised delivery and installation service which takes the hassle out of buying a PC."

Buyers can order the model by telephone on 0800-611722.
