Once again, Google's Android mobile operating system and Samsung continue to dominate the mobile OEM and smartphone platform market shares, respectively, in the United States, according to the May 2012 report from comScore.
At this point, it's becoming a bit of a broken record as neither of these two brands show much sign of slowing, and neither have seen negative point changes for awhile now.
Nevertheless, there are a few points that can be drawn out of the latest findings.
For instance, Apple saw a boost in the 3-month period ending in May. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company saw the biggest share increases out of the top five players in both categories.
In the mobile OEM space, Apple remained in third place with 15 percent of the market share with a 1.5 point increase. Samsung was the only other manufacturer in the top five to see a positive change with a 0.1 point increase to lead with 25.7 percent of the market share.
As for smartphones, Apple's iOS still secures second place behind Android, climbing by 1.7 points to 31.9 percent. Android still holds at a little over half of the market at 50.9 percent. However, Microsoft also saw a positive change, jumping from 3.9 percent to 4.0 percent. The Redmond, Wash.-based maker of Windows Phone sat pretty at fourth place.
On another note, the battle over native apps versus those built in HTML 5 continues as downloaded app usage trumped browser usage for mobile content access. More than 51.1 percent of mobile users used native apps for accessing mobile media content, while 49.8 opted for browser-based content.
For reference, comScore surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers for this report. Overall, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices between February and May 2012.
