The latest version of Faronics Power Save, release 4.2, includes several features focused on simplifying the creation of power management plans. They include:

  • A new Power Plan Assistant for setting up automating power savings plans that take action when certain conditions are met (this eliminates a more manual process)
  • The addition of Lotus Notes support as part of the software's "Save Open Documents" function. That means if you have Notes open and your system goes idle, Power Save 4.2 will make sure that e-mail drafts, open to-do list and calendars will be saved prior to the system shutting down to conserve power

Faronics offers a trial version at this link.

The company has also disclosed that one of its clients, the Chaffey Joint Union High School in Ontario, Calif., is saving $350,000 annually by using Power Save to shut down inactive PCs. Faronics claims more than 150 educational institutions in California as customers. The district has more than 2,000 employees and 25,000 students. The fact that this school district is in California is noteworthy: 15 utility companies in the state offer rebates that could cover up to 100 percent of the purchase and deployment costs for Faronics, if certain conditions are met.
