Corel bids to make NC a video star

Canadian software house Corel has formalised plans to release a Java-based video-enabled Network Computer (NC) which will compete with basic NCs from Sun , IBM and others.

Corel's Video NC is a Motorola MPC 821 Power PC-based thin client running Corel's Office for Java on the Java Virtual Machine in 16Mb RAM, and connecting to the Internet through a V.34 modem or 10Mb/sec Ethernet connection. It includes a Corel digital camera, speakers and a microphone for videoconferencing, and two PC Card slots for expansion.

The firm also plans to release a Java-based handheld it calls the Portable Network Computer (PNC).
