The much-anticipated Dabble DB is coming out of beta today - and it already has paying customers. They're calling it "the first true Enterprise 2.0 company", which is another way of saying that Dabble DB is a totally new type of enterprise office application. On the homepage it's described as:

"Dabble DB combines the best of group spreadsheets, custom databases, and intranet web applications into a new way to manage and share your information on the web."

Take a look at the 7-minute video demo to get an understanding of what it does. The features include ability to get a lot of different views on a data source (table view, calendar view, etc), filtering data by keyword etc, and ability to easily change data types.

Dabble DB is part spreadsheet, part database, part collaboration app. It is among a small group of innovative new web-based office applications, all of which have hybrid functionality that can't easily be compared to existing desktop office applications. Products like JotSpot Tracker, Zoho Creator, DIY web app builder Ning and (perhaps the real dark horse of the Web Office field) Google Base.

There is in fact sophisticated functionality in Dabble DB - and a lot of it is a 'mashup' of what desktop office apps can do. For example viewing your data as tables, charts and calendars. I think Dabble DB points the way to a truly networked and collaborative workplace, one that uses the Web as its platform. I can't wait till these types of apps infiltrate the workplace!
