Apple Computer Inc. may be shipping its new PowerBook G4 Titanium, but don't count on picking one up this weekend at your local Mac dealer unless you've preordered.

Several resellers said they've received enough units to fill only a small portion of their back orders. Others have only demonstration models, and some have yet to get their first shipment. All reported heavy demand for the laptops.

Delaware Computer Exchange, an Apple (aapl)specialist in Wilmington, Del., received its demonstration unit Friday, said store manager Davis Jefferson. The reseller ordered 20, he said, and has about that many customers on a waiting list. "I'm telling people that I will have them in 30 to 45 days, but at least I have something for people to look at." To show off the laptop's multimedia capabilities, he's hooked up Harman Kardon's SoundSticks speakers and is running a DVD of "The Matrix."

Some customers who can't wait are buying 400MHz G3 PowerBooks, which at $1,999 "is a nice price," he said. But most are holding off for the new models. Full story.--Joe LiPetri and Stephen Beale, MacWEEK.com
