A man who allegedly posted death threats on the Internet appeared in court Wednesday.

Paul Clark, an electronic engineer of no fixed abode is charged with making threats to kill. He allegedly offered a bounty in return for the killing of an American couple. It is believed to be the first inquiry into an online contract killing.

Clark reportedly posted pictures of an American woman he met in an Internet chatroom and her husband on a Web site with a call for them to be "terminated". He allegedly offered £15,400 to anyone who could provide photographic proof of the killings.

The case -- at Portsmouth magistrates court -- was adjourned until next week.
