Dell denies Data General buyout rumours

Dell today played down rumours that it is to mimic Compaq's purchase of Digital by buying Data General or another enterprise computing vendor.

"I was at a sales conference recently with [Dell CEO and chairman] Michael Dell and he said that there were definitely no plans to follow Compaq," said David Moore, Dell Direct UK marketing manager.

"It was pretty emphatic. Dell's best investment is itself," he added, noting that the company had been busy recently buying back shares as the firm continues to be one of Wall Street's technology stock darlings.

"We've got a good, broad business which is growing very fast and we don't need to be buying anybody right now. At some point we might need to but the last thing we need now is a major hiccup caused by trying to digest a big company."
