Digital Equipment Corp. in March rolled out a pair of monochrome laser printers for small workgroups and another monochrome laser printer aimed at larger sites.
Digital's new LN17+ and LN17+ps are 17-page-per-minute devices that print at 600 dpi onto media as large as 11 by 17 inches. Both printers have an enhanced resolution mode that the company said will allow them to print at 1,200 by 600 dpi.
The LN17+ and LN17+ps both support the PCL 5e page description language; the latter also supports Adobe PostScript Level 2. Digital said the LN17+ comes with 2 Mbytes of RAM, while the LN17+ps come with 6 Mbytes. Both can be upgraded to 64 Mbytes of RAM.
The $1,595 LN17+ requires a $499 Ethernet card or a $169 serial interface to connect to a Mac; the $2,879 LN17+ps comes with an Ethernet card, Digital said.
Both printers run on a 25-MHz Intel 960 JD50 processor. Each one ships with 35 Intellifonts, 10 TrueType fonts and one PCL bit-map font. In addition, the LN17+ps comes with 35 PostScript Type 1 fonts, the company said.
The printers come with 100- and 250-sheet input trays and a 250-sheet output tray.
Also new from Digital, the LN40 prints 40 pages per minute at 600 dpi. The $22,995 printer, which runs on a 100-MHz NEC RISC processor, comes with 32 Mbytes of RAM and can be upgraded to 128 Mbytes. The LN40 supports PCL 5e and Adobe PostScript Level 2, and it ships with 42 TrueType and 51 PCL 5e fonts, the company said.
The device prints on media as large as 11 by 17 inches and comes with Ethernet capabilities.
The LN40 features three 500-sheet input trays and a duplexing mode.
