Documents To Go for Android adds PDF and PowerPoint support

Just three months ago I posted my full review of Documents To Go for the Google Android platform and was very excited by the advanced features that DataViz was able to pack into this mobile application. I am very pleased to say that the version 2 I have been using over the last week continues to push the limits and IMHO brings the BEST mobile Office suite I have ever seen on a mobile device. I won't go back over all the Word and Excel features I covered in my last review, but will focus on the new PowerPoint and PDF support as well as other major improvements.

PowerPoint

PowerPoint is one of those applications that I think only the serious mobile geek appreciates and uses on their device. DataViz has supported this capability on other devices in the past so it stands to reason they would add support on Google Android. Some of the key features of the PowerPoint module include:

• Office 2003 & 2007
• Password-protected file support
• Portrait and landscape view with auto-rotate
• Zooming
• Slide view with easy flick navigation
• Outline and Notes view
• Slide sorting
• Find
• Go To Slide
• Insert, delete and duplicate slide
• Insert bullet
• Increase and decrease indent
• Undo and Redo

I don't believe any Android device currently supports TV out so this application is truly targeted to creation and editing of presentations right on your device. You can also use it to view and practice presentation on the plane, which is something I have done a few times before. I honestly do not see myself using this capability much, but it is a free update to existing owners and it is always nice to have.

Adobe PDF support

I was pretty amazed that there was not any support for viewing PDF files in Android and never bought a stand-alone PDF viewer because I knew one of the Office suite developers would release a client. I am very pleased to see Adobe PDF support from DataViz and have already used it several times to open up emails sent from clients.

The Adobe PDF support includes:

• Zooming
• Portrait and landscape view with auto-rotate
• Word wrap
• Go To Page
• Bookmarks
• Search
• Select and copy text
• Password-protected file support
• Save As and Send via E-mail options

I particularly liked the ability to select and copy text since sometimes that is difficult even on the desktop. Some protected PDF documents may not support this feature, but I haven't test enough to make that determination yet. Viewing in word wrap mode is also great if you just need to read some content and don't need to maintain any formatting.

Other major improvements

DataViz did not just spend time adding these two new modules, but also improved both the Word and Excel functions through improved scrolling, improved text/cell selection, improved on-screen keyboard support (vital for my new myTouch 3G), Word Count, Find & Replace, and more.

DataViz also added a Live Folder so you can quickly get to your Most Recently Used files by adding this folder to your Android home screen.

For those of you Android owners that just need to be able to view Word and Excel files, then DataViz is offering the Documents To Go viewer for FREE.

Pricing and availability

If you purchased Documents To Go for your Android device already then you get a free upgrade to this latest version. New buyers will now have to pay the regular $29.9 instead of the previous $19.99 special launch price, but I still think that is a good deal for how powerful this application is and how much it adds to your capability to work on the go. Documents To Go 2 should be available in the Android Market.
