EnFocus Software Inc. this week checked in with new tools and servers for prepress work flows that use Adobe Systems Inc.'s Portable Document Format.

The company released CheckUp, a Portable Document Format (PDF) preflighting tool for Mac and Windows 95 and NT. The $195 plug-in for Adobe Acrobat Exchange 3.0 analyzes files for potential printing problems.

EnFocus said the program can be used for both prepress and Internet work flows. For example, it can find large, high-resolution images that can be down-sampled to a lower resolution, as well as CMYK images that need to be converted to RGB for use on the Web.

In addition, the software generates a report that contains links to corresponding items within the source document. Users can also import and export documents "profiles" that can be reused with other jobs.

Meanwhile, EnFocus said it will offer a free upgrade to its $869 PitStop PDF utility later this month (see 06.23.97, Page 11).

Version 1.5 of the Acrobat 3.0 plug-in will let users copy and paste objects between pages and documents. It will also support system fonts, so users can embed fonts within Acrobat documents. The company said the upgrade will come with the CheckUp plug-in.

In addition, EnFocus said it expects to release a midrange production server in the first quarter of 1998. EnFocus has not set prices for the server software, which will be offered for Mac and Windows NT platforms.

Code-named Ferrari, the server will offer preflighting of PDF and PostScript files. The server will preflight and fix most color, font and image problems automatically, the company said.
