Equant expands network capacity to Asia
SINGAPORE - The added capacity, a 155 Mbps indefeasible right of use (IRU), is now operational between Seattle and Tokyo.
"By putting more high-volume capacity on our network, we are enabling our Internet customers to have direct multi-megabit access to Internet content in the Pacific Rim," said John Allkins, Equant's chief financial officer.
"This also is another step in our strategy to purchase network capacity on key routes where it is more cost efficient to own than lease," he added.
Equant's purchase gives it a total of 20.5 Gbps of owned international city-to-city connections, which is in addition to its leased network capacity worldwide.
By the end of 2000, Equant plans to own 33 Gbps of capacity.
In 1999, Equant purchased IRUs linking the United States and Europe, and four key European cities. Equant also purchased additional capacity between Europe and Asia last year.
