Ericsson is looking to increase its business activities in Indonesia, its largest market in Southeast Asia, as it ramps up the deployment of machine-to-machine (M2M) products to its operator customer base.
The Jakarta Post reported last Saturday Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg visited the country recently and said the market is a top 10 market in terms of revenue for the Swedish telecoms equipment vendor. Its customers there include the top three local operators PT Telekomunikasi Selular, PT Indosat and , it noted.
The report noted these operators have been increasing their network expansion rollouts, especially in terms of 3G base transceiver stations to accommodate the growing mobile data traffic.
In addition to its staple of networking equipment, Ericsson is hoping to grow its services business in the market too. These include boosting the M2M business by helping operators integrate their IT systems and enabling machines to "talk" to each other.
Certain local operators have already rolled out electric metering services, in which electricty boxes in homes are installed with SIM cards so that information on electricity usage will be sent to the state utility company PT PLN, the Jakarta Post noted.
"We look to be successful in machine-to-machine solutions," said Johan Wiberg, head of networks business unit at Ericsson, in the report.
The telecoms company in January 2013, but said sales were up by 5 percent year-on-year, or 66.9 billion crowns (US$12.18 billion). The increase in sales were attributed to investments in North American and Japanese mobile broadband networks.
