Facebook shuttering Gift Shop on August 1

Facebook is calling it quits on its Gift Shop feature at the end of the month. Don't worry, any "gifts" you already wasted money on will still appear on profiles.

The Gift Shop opened for business in 2007, but it never achieved the response and excitement that most other features on the social-networking site produced. Facebook will focus on "improving other products," while third-party gift giving companies like Hallmark will still be a presence on the site. Any ideas or wishes as to what those products should be?

Seriously, who wants to pay $1 to send someone a tiny icon of a birthday cake? What would have been more useful is keeping more of the funny and ironic icons around for free. Those actually attained popularity - even if not serving much of a purpose.

Facebook is trimming the fat in several places these days, including the cutting of the recently-purchased NextStop service this September.
