FireEye launches R&D center in Bangalore

IT security vendor opens a US$50 million research and development facility in Bangalore, India, which it says will employ 50 researchers by year-end.

A former McAfee veteran has been appointed to manage FireEye's freshly minted US$50 million R&D (research and development) center located in Bangalore, India.

In a statement released March 14, the IT security vendor said the center will employ 50 researchers by year-end. FireEye is hoping the facility's head, Sridhar Jayanthi, can recreate his achievements at McAfee India where he established the company's largest R&D team. Jayanthi is the company's regional sales director and managing director for India. 

The new facility has commenced operations, and serves as a hub for the development and testing new FireEye products. 

"The Bangalore office is an important milestone for FireEye's global expansion," Ashar Aziz, founder and CTO of FireEye, said in the statement. "We expect the new Bangalore office to play a key role in maintaining cutting‐edge technology and innovation in the FireEye line of security products."

In a separate report released on the same day, Zinnov Consulting said Indian MNC (multinational corporation) centers, also referred to as global in-house centers, must innovate to stay relevant having reached "a level of optimal maturity" in delivering on R&D, IT, and business process services. It pointed to infrastructure management services (IMS) as a green-field area, offering scope for innovation and these centers an opportunity to evolve into a multi-function center.

The consulting firm's whitepaper urged MNC centers to raise their profile and drive transformation within the parent company, which expect the centers to take green-field initiatives to inception within two years. This puts pressure on these MNC centers to innovate and deliver results.

"Innovation is no more considered a value-add. It is now a service delivery imperative," Sundararaman Vishwanathan, manager of consulting at Zinnov, said in the report. "Today, MNC center cannot be a provider of point solutions anymore. They should be able to deliver integrated services across the complex spectrum of physical, virtual, mobile and cloud-enabled IT infrastructure to the parent organization."
