Fonedata launches free wireless ISP

Free WAP ISP launches in the UKUK mobile Internet company Fonedata has launched a free wireless ISP.

WAPfone provides a gateway that enables access to online WAP content, independent of the UK's four major mobile networks. The service allows owners of WAP enabled devices to access dedicated WAP sites via a dial-up connection.

Simon Luttrell, managing director of Fonedata, claims advantage of an independent WAP gateway lies in its unrestricted access to all WAP enabled sites, rather than being tied down to a "walled garden of content" offered by the big four.

Fonedata makes its money from a call charge deal, similar to most land line ISPs. The company claims that it can handle up to 10,000 phones at present and will increase the number of access servers when useage hits 60 percent.
