Australian e-commerce tech startup Bigcommerce has announced the appointment of former PayPal Europe and HomeAway CEO Brent Bellm as its new chief executive officer.
Bellm joins Bigcommerce after a stint as president and COO at vacation rental giant HomeAway, during which time the company completed its initial public offering (IPO) and tripled its quarterly revenues. Prior to HomeAway, Bellm spent more than seven years in a variety of executive leadership positions at PayPal.
Coupled with the announcement, Bigcommerce co-founder Eddie Machaalani has stepped down as CEO, remaining as executive chairman of the board.
"Brent shares in Bigcommerce's vision to democratise commerce for high-growth brands that are challenging the giants in their industries," Machaalani said. "Brent is the right leader to oversee our next stage of growth and ensure we are meeting the needs of today's merchants and building a premium platform."
Bellm's appointment comes amid a period of growth for Bigcommerce, which now powers more than 95,000 stores including Samsung, Gibson, Marvel, Cetaphil, Schwinn, Pergo, Enfamil, and Ubisoft. This year alone, the company has announced partnership agreements with Intuit, Square, and Alibaba.
Bigcommerce has already attracted some notable names from the tech industry to its advisory board, announcing the appointment of former Google employee Tim Shulz as chief product officer earlier this year; ex-Nasuni COO and CFO Scott Dussault; Christoper Fry, the former head of engineering at Twitter; and ex-Groupon and Amazon executive Kal Raman.
