Gates calls on industry to mobilise on security, smart cards

In the aftermath of the Love bug outbreak, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates urged the computer industry to adopt stronger security measures, including the adoption of a unified network directory and the wider use of smart cards

"I would say today that the weakest link in security management is that passwords are used to identify who is running the system," Gates said. He said the answer would be to move away from passwords being the only form of authentication. "The dominant approach would be physical possession of a smart card."
