Gates to crit UK IT position next week

Bill Gates will visit Cambridge next week as he catches up with progress on Microsoft's £60 million investment into research and startups.

In mid-June, Microsoft said it planned to spend £50 million in a Cambridge University-based facility dubbed Microsoft Research, and an additional £10 million on European startup companies.

Gates is scheduled to hold a press conference at St John's College, Cambridge on Tuesday where he will give his views on how the UK can become "a leading player in the technology age". Like Intel's Andy Grove and Oracle's Larry Ellison, Gates has in the past critiscised Europe for its relatively slow progress in developing IT infrastructure.
