Google adds Three network to boost international data speeds for Project Fi

Google said Tuesday it has added Three to its collection of cellular networks to boost international data speeds for Project Fi.

"With the addition of Three to the Project Fi network, we're now able to deliver speeds 10-20X faster than before," Google said in a blog post. "And, just as before, there are no extra fees for using data internationally."

First launched last April, Project Fi is Google's pay-for-what-you-use voice and data plan. It relies heavily on Wi-Fi networks to keep costs down, both for Google and Project Fi customers.

The plan starts at a base cost of $20 per month, which covers all voice minutes, texts, Wi-Fi tethering, and international coverage in more than 135 countries. There's also a flat add-on fee for cellular data, priced at $10 per GB. To sweeten the deal, however, Google credits back any unused data, so you never pay for what you don't use.

The catch is that Project Fi only works with a limited number of phones designed by Google, including the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.
