Google has acknowledged that its recently launched Galaxy Nexus smartphone has a problem with wildly fluctuating volume.

The company said it was aware of the problem and had developed a fix. Google said it would "update the devices as soon as possible" but did not say when exactly this would happen.

Early adopters of the device, launched on 17 November, began reporting issues with unpredictable volume fluctuations almost immediately. Users on XDA Developers forum, the Samsung UK Facebook wall and Google support pages suggested that the problem was worst when the handset reverted to 2G mode.

Online retailer Handtec put delivery of customer orders on hold after its own testing.
