High-tech holiday lights you can control with your smartphone

Spread some holiday cheer - or just annoy people - with high-tech lights you can control from your smartphone.

Quite a few of you want to know the answer to this:

"Are there holiday lights/Christmas tree lights that I can control from my smartphones?"

You bet there are!

Here's what you need to spread some holiday cheer - or just annoy people - with high-tech lights you can control from your smartphone.

Lumenplay

Lumenplay is an extendable string of app-enabled RGB LED lights that connect to your iPhone or Android device using Bluetooth. There are a number of different bulb types to choose from.

These are super easy to use, but the downside is that they get pricey if you want a lot of lights (starter sets begin at around $70).

iTwinkle

iTwinkle offer a range of different lights, from ones built into artificial trees to icicle and bauble shapes. A variety of different controls are offered, from predefined patterns to voice and music activation.

WeMo

If you've already made a substantial investment in lights and don't want to buy more, you can add the ability to turn them on and off with your smartphone using a WeMo switch. OK, you won't be able to be as creative (or annoying) as you might be with a set of smart lights, but it's a start. Alternatively, you can do some indoor decorating using some flexible LED strips .

The DIY approach

If you like tinkering with electronics and have time to spare, why not build your own set based around an Arduino micro computer ?
