Hon Hai launches online shopping platform in Taiwan

Taiwanese electronics manufacturer unveils its first online shopping site domestically, and will promote its 60-inch TVs and Musn-branded phones, as well as Sharp's Aquos smartphones.

Electronics manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry is launching its first online shopping portal in Taiwan, with TVs and smartphones among the available products for purchase.

Citing an unnamed company source, Central News Agency (CNA) reported Wednesday Hon Hai's retail business division, CyberMart, will launch the shopping platform on Dec. 27. Named WOWCyber, the e-commerce portal will initially promote Hon Hai's 60-inch TVs and phones, and Sharp's high-end smartphones , it said.

According to the source, the first 500 Hon Hai TVs offered only to companies during the Dec. 25 presales period were sold out within two and a half hours. WOWCyber will offer another 500 units to companies on Thursday.

Besides its TVs, the online shopping site also promotes Foxconn's own Musn range of phones, and Sharp's Aquos Phone SH930W, the source said. However, there are no plans yet to sell the Japanese company's other high-end smartphones that come with its latest IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) display panels .

Hon Hai estimates shipments of its 60-inch TVs could surpass 10,000 units by January 2013, the source added.

Earlier in March, Sharp agreed to a partnership with Hon Hai which would see the latter inject much-needed capital for the ailing Japanese company to stay afloat. In exchange, Hon Hai would become the largest stakeholder of the Japanese electronics giant. The deal has met with several obstacles since, including Sharp's declining share price , which required both companies to engage in ongoing re-negotiations.
