The HP TouchPad tablet is now available to buy in the UK following its launch in the US, France and Germany on 1 July.

The 9.7-inch tablet is on sale directly from HP — or selected retailers such as PC World, Amazon and Carphone Warehouse — priced at £399 for the 16GB version or £479 for the 32GB.

The TouchPad runs the WebOS operating system acquired by HP with its purchase of Palm, announced in April 2010. HP has said it will bring the OS to devices with a number of different form factors, including PCs.

"This is our first tablet device powered by WebOS and initial feedback from the media and consumers has been very positive. HP has an aggressive plan to bring the WebOS operating system to millions of devices over the coming months, and the HP TouchPad is an important first step," Paul Hunter, vice president of HP personal systems group (PSG) for the UK and Ireland, said in a statement on Friday.

The device is currently being offered in a WiFi-only configuration and an HP spokeswoman was unable to confirm to ZDNet UK on Friday whether or not a 3G-equipped variant would be coming to the UK. A 4G version has already been announced for the US.

The spokeswoman was also unable to offer any information on UK operators that will carry the device.
