HP's commercial mobility group unveiled a new tablet for the enterprise, along with an update to its device management software. The Pro Tablet 608 is a Windows slate with a 7.9-inch display that features a high-resolution screen (2048 x 1536). This is a 4:3 aspect ratio which better fits a small tablet.

HP told ZDNet the new tablet is aimed at executives and mobile professionals needing a tablet solution. It believes the market will support such a tablet as the company has determined that 83 percent of customer CIOs have implemented or plan to implement mobile solutions in the near future.

The HP Pro Tablet 608 is highly portable as the dimensions make clear -- 137 x 208 x 8.3 mm (5.39 x 8.19 x 0.33 inches). Despite the small size it packs a punch with an Intel Atom processor onboard. It has a microSD slot that can provide an additional 2 TB of storage for even the heaviest of storage needs, along with a USB-C charging port.

HP is offering several accessories to maximize productivity with the Pro Tablet. These include a portable dock with an assortment of ports -- including a monitor port, HDMI, USB, and RJ45. The tablet can be charged in the dock. According to HP the dock is small enough to easily take on business trips.

Another accessory is a folio keyboard that connects to the tablet magnetically, similar to Microsoft's Surface tablets. It features a holder for the optional tablet pen. There will also be a rugged case for the Pro Tablet 608 to protect it from bumps in the field.

The HP Pro Tablet 608 will be available for purchase from HP's commercial sales channel in mid-July for $479 with Windows 8.1. A model with Windows 10 will be available once the OS is released at a price to be determined.

In addition to the new tablet, HP has updated its Touchpoint Manager suite. This update to the software allows corporate IT staff to remotely and securely service mobile devices globally.
