IBM and Intel team-up for Alert on LAN

IBM and Intel have joined forces to develop a technology that will alert IT managers to a problem in a PC, even if it is turned off.

The Alert on LAN technology will be included in Intel's 82558 LAN on motherboard chip set and IBM intends to use it in its PCs as well as its NT-based workstation range called IntelliStation.

Alert on LAN will send warnings about any problem on the machine, including overheating, load-balancing or just component failure. It will also help alert the manager of computer or component theft. If a machine is unplugged or taken offline, a warning message appears on the manager's console.

The technology is expected to make its first appearance in IBM's PC 300 and Intellistation series in the second quarter of this year, along with an Intel product intended for other PC vendors.
