IBM to ship 8.4Gb 3.5-inch hard drive

IBM will this month release the highest density hard drive on the market when it ships a 3.5-inch unit capable of holding 8.4Gb of data.

The Deskstar 8 ATA-3 drive uses four platters, has an average seek rate of 9.5ms, and supports Ultra DMA 33Mb/sec internal transfer rates.

IBM says Deskstar 8 is the first drive to offer its proprietary MRX (magnetoresisitive extended) head technology. The firm says MRX delivers stronger signals than orthodox magnetoresistive heads, thereby increasing density.

IBM expects to incorporate the drive in high-end desktop PCs scheduled to ship later this year.
