iiNet launches BYO mobile service

Internet service provider iiNet has moved into the mobile arena, unveiling a number of contract-free mobile phone plans today.

Coverage maps and information about the plans are available on the iiNet website.

The post-paid plans come in at $10, $20 or $40, which includes between $150 and $750 worth of calls and between 250MB and 1.5GB of data per month. Each plan gives the customer unlimited access to social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and eBay.

The ISP said it will inform customers via SMS if they are close to passing their monthly limit.

Users wishing to sign onto the plans will be required to already have their own phone.

iiNet chief executive officer Michael Malone said the final plans were formed in response to customer feedback received during the plans' development.

"We asked what was important in a mobile offering and we've responded with unmetered social networking, call usage notifications and great value monthly plans, minus the binding contract," he said in a statement.

The telco told ZDNet Australia that its services will be operating on Optus' network.
