Intel working on augmented reality chipsets

Chipmaker said to be working with Total Immersion to bring augmented reality features such as gesture recognition into chipsets and help boost uptake of technology, report notes.

Both Intel and Total Immersion, which specializes in augmented reality (AR), are working together to bring features such as gesture recognition to chipsets, which are used in devices such as smartphones or computers, one report stated.

According to the Reuters report on Wednesday, Total Immersion's marketing chief, Antoine Brachet, revealed that the company is collaborating with the U.S. chipmaker to bring AR capabilities to the latter's products. He added the consumer acceptance will determine how soon these chipsets would reach the market, and thinks this could happen in two to three years.

"What we are doing together with Intel is working on its chipset…so inside the chipset you can have some AR features, like gesture recognition that can be transferred from software to hardware," Brachet told Reuters.

The report also noted that Intel took a stake in Total Immersion in March after the chipmaker's investment arm led the US$5.5 million funding round for the AR company.

Industry watchers ZDNet Asia spoke to earlier had stated that the use of augmented reality, particularly in apps, is still in its infancy, held back by issues such as lack of understanding of how it can be applied, battery drain on the device and mobile fragmentation.
