Eckhard Pfeiffer, ousted from Compaq Computer Corp.'s helm nearly five months ago, has been named chairman of the board of e-commerce vendor Intershop Communications.

Pfeiffer, who is expected to open a lot of doors for the e-commerce vendor, will be officially ushered into his new role on Monday at New York City's Intershop Open show.

"Pfeiffer has a proven track record in bringing a mid-tier company into a top-tier industry leader," says Intershop's VP of marketing Ed Callan, who adds that discussions between the two parties had been going on for two months.

Pfeiffer is expected to take a fairly active role in the company's management, although Callan says the Chairman won't be involved in the day-to-day grind.

Monday's official announcement will also be accompanied by a new Intershop product targeting the high-end e-commerce space.
