Iran has blocked the British Embassy website, according to the Foreign Office.

The 'UK in Iran' website has been added to a blacklist of proscribed sites, foreign secretary William Hague said in a statement on Thursday.

"This action is counter-productive and ill-judged," said Hague. "It will confirm to the Iranian people that their government is determined to block their access to information, and to conceal from them the international community’s legitimate concerns about Iran's policies and behaviour." Hague said that the UK would continue "to engage with the Iranian people, including through the internet."

If users in Iran try to visit the British Embassy website, they are blocked, and redirected to a page which has regime-approved content, a Foreign Office spokesman told ZDNet UK on Thursday. The block could have been put in place by Iranian internet service providers, the spokesman added.

Britain and Iran have clashed over Iran's nuclear programme, and the website block could be indicative of heightened tensions between the two political entities. The UK government closed the British Embassy in Tehran in November.
