Kickstarter crowdfunders pledged hundreds of millions in 2013

Kickstarter has shared some stats from 2013. Here's a look at what the crowdfunding community did last year.

Every time you turn around there's news of another crowdfunding effort. But how much do people actually pledge and how many projects, like films, games, design and tech products become a reality because of crowdfunding?

Over at Kickstarter, folks were busy in 2013. According to the crowdfunding site's stats, 3 million people pledged $480 million to Kickstarter projects last year and 19,911 projects were successfully funded in 2013.

The important term here is "pledged." That doesn't mean all of that money was spent.

Still, the site experienced a 50 percent increase from the $319 million pledged in 2012. Since the company launched in 2009, 5.5 million people have pledged $939 million, funding 54,000 creative projects.

Some of the projects that have come to fruition because of crowdfunding include the Ouya video game console, Goldieblox engineering toy for girls and the documentary film Inocente, which won an Oscar.

The actual crowdfunding numbers are likely much larger since Kickstarter is no longer the only site acting as liaison between potential backers and those who are trying to give life to their idea.
