Kineto Wireless chose cloud backup. Here's why.

Steve Robey, IT Director for Kineto Wireless, discusses his company's IT infrastructure and why was chosen as a cloud-based backup and disaster recovery solution.

Steve Robey of Kineto Wireless stopped by to discuss why his company chose's cloud backup and disaster recovery services. I thought you'd like to hear his story.

Please introduce yourself and your organization.

I'm Steve Robey, Director of IT and Facilities for Kineto Wireless. Kineto strives to assist mobile operators in the transition to IP-based services. Our solutions help operators respond to the growing threat from over-the-top (OTT) service providers and remain competitive as communications service providers.

To accomplish this goal, we offer a portfolio of Telco-OTT applications that help operators address specific communications challenges and opportunities.

What were you doing that required this type of technology?

Kineto has 30 servers housing 3.5TB of data. This consists of two dozen databases including a 600GB SharePoint database and a large amount of unstructured data. We needed to find a lower cost and more time-efficient way to do our server backups. We also needed to minimize the amount of downtime backup operations required since we run a 24 hour-a-day operation.

Our tape backup system was no longer meeting our needs. The manual tape back up operation was creating high archiving and maintenance costs and reducing our productivity. When our tape backup solution was discontinued by the supplier we were facing the need to either execute a "fork lift upgrade" or find a more efficient alternative that didn't require we acquire more hardware or software licenses.

What products did you consider before making a selection?

After comparing several enterprise cloud backup solutions , Kineto selected’s cloud-based backup and disaster recovery system.

When we evaluated both the costs and the time we'd save, the switch to was a no-brainer.

What tangible benefit have you received through the use of this product?

Since Zetta's package includes support, we didn't need to budget for annual maintenance, service or support costs. Since Zetta’s cloud-based solution already provides offsite server backup, we wouldn’t have to worry about rotating tapes offsite for protection against local site events. With Zett, we predicted that our costs would be lower. After using Zetta, we learned that our overall monthly costs for backup would be 50 percent lower.

We toured Zetta's site, spoke with them and started a free trial of the service. Later, we were able to migrate to their service at a rate of about 10 servers a week. The transition was a little faster than I expected.

Unfortunately, we got to learn first hand what Zetta does. Multiple hard drives failed in a RAID configuration. We were able to use Zetta for disaster recovery. The process was both fast and efficient. We didn't lose data. And since it happened over a weekend, we had barely any downtime, nobody really even noticed—except for me. In terms of IT budget, my time, and disaster recovery capability, we're light-years ahead of where we'd been."

What advice would you offer others who are facing similar circumstances? 

My advice is to take advantage of the cloud. It is ready even though some would think that it is a bit early for bold adoption.

We had moved to a new physical site. We installed a fiber network connection during that process. It would be wise to consider your network infrastructure's capabilities before moving to a cloud backup solution.
