Level 3 introduces nomadic E-911 solution

Today, Level 3 Communications announced what I believe to be one of the more creative solutions to nomadic E-911 access for VoIP users.

In this context, "nomadic E-911" means that if you are VoIP user dialing "911" from a different location than the one you've registered with and is associated with an IP address, emergency response dispatch personnel will be able to determine your current location and dispatch help.

The solution will involve a process that involves routing incoming 911 calls to a VoIP Positioning Center that collects and stores updated location information. This updated information will be submitted by subscribers, who will use location update functionality platforms provided to them by their service providers.

Level 3 announced this nomadic E-911 service today at the National Emergency Number Association's  annual conference and trade show in Long Beach, Cal. The service is expected to be in place by the Federal Communication Commission's mandatory E-911 deadline in September.
