The UK will be next, along with the Netherlands, Sweden and Italy, LG said on Monday. The rest of Europe, Asia, South and Central America will get a chance to buy the handset later, "in the weeks and months ahead", the company said.

The Optimus 4X HD is powered by a quad-core, 1.5GHz Tegra 3 processor and has a large 4.7-inch IPS screen with a 1280 x 720-pixel resolution and a high pixel density of 313 pixels per inch.

The smartphone also has a large 2,150mAh battery to support the processor. A software update will bring an application called Eco-Mode, which will let the user shut down any of the processor's cores when they are not needed.

LG said last month that the UK would get the Optimus 4X HD in June. However, on Tuesday a spokesperson for the company was unable to confirm whether this timescale was still on track.
