LinkedIn India reaches 10 Million users milestone

LinkedIn India now has 10 Million registered users from India compared to 28 Million on Facebook. The growth is significant compared to traditional job portals who have spent heavily on marketing and advertising.

Social network for professionals and job hunt website LinkedIn announced that they now have 10 Million users from India.

In a press release from LinkedIn India, the company says they have over a 100 Million users globally of which, according to ComScore, 33.4 Million users are from the United States (till May). Last month LinkedIn filed for an IPO which was welcomed by much fanfare within the tech community. It is believed that the IPO news helped LinkedIn increase awareness and thereby its user base in May.

The numbers from India are surprisingly good and signify growing awareness among Indians. Traditional job portals such as Monster and Naukri have invested heavily in television advertisements. Numbers shared by Medianama claim Naukri has close to 25 Million resumes. LinkedIn on the other hand has grown largely based on the product and word-of-mouth, much like Facebook or Orkut. To compare LinkedIn's numbers, Facebook India has over 28.5 Million users.

A recent Nielsen study said that nearly 30 Million Indians are members of social media websites and 43% users researched employers or employees on these networks. The LinkedIn press release has shared some interesting statistics on users from India:

  • Top 10 surnames on LinkedIn include are Kumar, Singh, Sharma, Gupta, Jain, Shah, Patel, Mishra, Reddy and Yadav
