Over 1,000 homes in inner-city Liverpool are to receive 200Mbps broadband delivered via power lines.
In Toxteth, Liverpool, 1,200 homes are to be fitted with smart metres as part of a £1m SmartGrid trial. Once the metres have been installed, power lines will be used to provide broadband with speeds of up to 200Mbps to the residents.
"This is another option to deliver super-fast broadband without having to dig up streets," Mark Knowles, low carbon manager for The Mersey Partnership, which has helped administer the scheme, told the Liverpool Daily Post.
Similar schemes have occurred in the past. In 2008, residents in the West Midlands were picked for a scheme that would deliver broadband through the electrical wiring of their council flats.
