Lotus is trying to poach Microsoft Office Select customers in the US with an aggressive SmartSuite competitive upgrade offer, but denied it is a worldwide policy.
Users of Office Select (the enterprise version of Office) wanting to upgrade will be encouraged by Lotus to jump ship to SmartSuite at a reduced price, to a product that offers support for MS Office file formats and a Word Menu Help Expert that converts Word functions to Lotus Word Pro.
"It's a US-specific strategy," said Pam Mills, Lotus UK's SmartSuite '97 product manager. "There are no plans for this in the UK."
