Lycos wins patent, will guard 'spider' search tech
Lycos president and CEO Robert Davis flew into London on Tuesday to trumpet the firm being granted a "notice of allowance" from the US patent office for its 'spider' indexing technology.
Davis denied that the acquisition of the licence would lead to a more litigious defence of its technologies in the courts, saying he hoped to reach amicable agreements where possible, but in the final analysis Lycos would defend its proprietary technologies.
The Internet search firm describe spiders as "automated software robots which crawl the Web collecting information about sites
