Institutes of higher learning and local industries in Malaysia are being encouraged to conduct research and development in wireless and telecommunications technology through grants provided by the government.

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 May 2000 (Asia Pulse) - Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister Leo Moggie said on Thursday this was to ensure that Malaysians did not become mere users of technology but also players in development.

"There are vast opportunities to be tapped from this area as the transformation into an information-based society and economy takes place, where wireless and telecommunications technology plays a very important role," he told reporters after opening the 4th International Wireless and Telecommunications Symposium/Exhibition (IWTS), in Petaling Jaya, near here.

Moggie said the symposium could be used as a platform for researchers and academicians to present their findings in the latest technology.

IWTS is jointly organised by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the Universiti Teknologi Mara and the Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia.

It was a platform for the dissemination of new findings, trials and state-of-art surveys on wireless, telecommunications and information technology, the organisers said.
