Malwarebytes goes Mac with new adware removal tool

The acquisition of AdwareMedic has given the company a new arsenal in combating Mac system infections.

Malwarebytes has released a new anti-malware and adware tool designed to combat the rising number of infections on Mac systems.

Announced on Wednesday, the new Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is free software developed to find and remove malware, adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). Malwarebytes says the Mac community is currently "underserved" in the antivirus sphere, and this is potentially the case -- as Mac systems traditionally are more difficult and time-consuming to crack in comparison to Windows, where security flaws are more numerous and exploitable.

As the cyberattack landscape changes, security companies need to consider operating systems beyond Windows when developing solutions. Nothing is sacred and cybercrime is on the rise -- placing the average user at more risk than ever before. Highlighting this concept, the new Mac-based software was launched following "repeated requests" by customers.

In addition to the release of the new malware cleaner, the firm also announced the acquisition of AdwareMedic, an app created for the quick cleanup of Mac systems. The tool has been downloaded almost three million times to combat threats including ad injections, junkware, unwanted toolbars and browser hijacking.

Financial details were not disclosed.

Thomas Reed, AdwareMedic creator and owner, will join the company as Director of Mac Offerings to lead Malwarebytes' team of Mac developers and researchers, who are attempting to stay ahead of the curve in a changing threat landscape.

"It used to be that Mac users were relatively safe from adware and malware. That's plainly not the case anymore. The bad guys are writing Trojans and ad pop-ups for the Mac," said Marcin Kleczynski, CEO of Malwarebytes.

"So in keeping with our vision that everyone has the right to a malware-free existence, we're offering a free Mac anti-malware product. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware forMac has been built from the ground up for the Mac environment -- it's not just a simple port of our PC product. It's a natural but unique addition to the Malwarebytes family."

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac 1.0 is now available for download. An SMB and enterprise version will be launched this fall.

This not the only acquisition Malwarebytes has made of late. In June, the firm acquired Junkware Removal Tool, a utility designed by Filipos Mouliatis to search for and eradicate adware, toolbars and PUPs from computer systems -- including those bundled with freeware, which can impact on PC memory and performance.
