Doing its bit in the fight against the cyber bug...

Microsoft is offering a free security program called IIS Lockdown Tool, which could help prevent future outbreaks of malicious computer bugs such as the Code Red worm. The free download aims to combat vulnerabilities in its Internet Information Services (IIS) product, part of the Windows NT and 2000 operating systems and used in the publication of web pages. The utility works by automatically configuring web servers to provide services only an administrator requires, thus reducing the ability of viruses and worms to propagate through any inactive functions. However, Microsoft stresses the service should be used in conjunction with other security services, such as antiviral software or firewall protection. Microsoft seems to be responding to the constant gripes of programmers claiming its software releases are often full of bugs and vulnerable to malicious code. IIS Lockdown Tool can be downloaded from the Microsoft website at www.microsoft.com/Downloads/Release.asp?ReleaseID=32362.
